While doctors frequently recommend that it is better for pregnant women to sleep at your left-hand side, a new study suggests that it cannot be an issue to sleep in other places.

Researchers studied outcomes data for 8,709 pregnant women who completed at least one sleep questionnaire before they reached a gestation of 30 weeks. Overall, 1903 females or 22% had severe complications of their childbirth, such as extremely high blood pressure and mortality or a small baby.

The study found that women who slept on the right or the back were less likely to experience serious problems than women who slept on the left.

She said Dr. Robert Silver, the study author and the chair of obstetrics and gynecologies at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, should reassure many pregnant women who could be worried about injuring their baby by sleep on their back or move on into this position during their night time.


Silver said by email “there’s an adverse side of encouraging the avoidance of (reverse) sleep.”

“Some women may have trouble sleeping on the left side and may not be able to control sleep movement,” Silver said. “Although careful messages allow women who wake up on their backs, and women who suffer adversely as a result of their pregnancy, such as deadbirth, have the potential to increase fear. In previous studies, sleep on the back and right side has been linked to increased risk of serious complications of pregnancy because these positions can compress the blood vessels that supply the uteruses, and res

Women were more likely to be seriously pregnant if overweight, obese, cigarettes, high blood pressure and diabetes was encountered before pregnancy in the study.

Neither women’s positions when they went to sleep or woke, and their positions during the night seemed to influence the risk of complications.

Studies have also analyzed the sleep positions critically measured for a number of women who have researched sleep at home for issues with night respirations. For these women too, there was no significant difference in the risk of complications because they were more than half the time, or less frequently, to sleep on their backs.

The study was not meant to show whether or how sleep positions could directly affect the outcome of the pregnancy. He did not also investigate the link in the final weeks of pregnancy between sleep and complexities.

One of the drawbacks of the study is that only about a dozen death occurred — which may be too limited for the study team to distinguish significant differences in this finding based on sleep position.

Females should still be confident of these outcomes, Dr. Nathan Fox, a medical professorship in Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine and vice president in New York City, said.
